Minecraft Forge vs Fabric: Which Server Loader Should You Choose?

Comparing Minecraft Forge and Fabric mod loaders for server hosting. Learn the differences in performance, mod availability, and ease of setup.

What Are Mod Loaders?

Mod loaders let you install mods that add new features, items, and mechanics to Minecraft beyond what vanilla offers. The two main loaders are Forge and Fabric.

Minecraft Forge

Forge has been around since 2011 and has the largest mod library. Almost every major modpack uses Forge. It is slower to update to new Minecraft versions and has more overhead than Fabric, but its ecosystem is unmatched.

Best for: Large modpacks, tech mods (Create, Mekanism, Applied Energistics), magic mods (Thaumcraft, Botania)

Fabric

Fabric is lighter, faster, and updates to new Minecraft versions much quicker. The Fabric mod ecosystem has grown massively and now includes many performance mods like Sodium, Lithium, and Starlight.

Best for: Performance-focused servers, newer version gameplay, smaller mod selections, optimization mods

NeoForge

NeoForge is a newer fork of Forge that aims to modernize the loader while maintaining Forge mod compatibility. It is worth watching for future modpack hosting.

Which to Choose?

Use Forge for big modpacks. Use Fabric for performance and modern versions. CraftNodes supports both out of the box.
