What Is a Modpack Server?
A modpack server runs a collection of mods that all players must also have installed. Popular modpacks include ATM9, FTB Revelation, RLCraft, and Create Above and Beyond.
How Much RAM Does a Modpack Need?
This depends on the modpack size. Small modpacks (under 50 mods) run fine on 4GB. Medium packs (50-150 mods) need 6-8GB. Large packs like ATM9 or FTB Infinity need 10-16GB. CraftNodes Emerald and Obsidian plans are popular for heavy modpacks.
Installing a Modpack
- Download the server-side modpack from CurseForge or FTB
- Upload the files via SFTP to your CraftNodes server
- Set the startup command to use the modpack's start script
- Start the server and wait for world generation
Forge vs Fabric
Most large modpacks use Forge. Fabric is faster and lighter but has fewer mods available. CraftNodes supports both.
Common Issues
- Out of memory errors: increase your plan or add more JVM heap allocation
- Mod conflicts: check the modpack's known issues list
- Slow world generation: NVMe Gen 4 storage on CraftNodes makes this much faster than average hosts
